Edwyn Collins returns: The Scottish
singer on his first track since suffering a stroke
Edwyn
Collins has told us the last five years have been very
hard work but he's very happy to be back doing what he
loves best. In 2005 a stroke left the singer barely able
to talk, walk, read or write. Now he is back with his
first track since becoming ill. It's called 'I'm Feeling
Lucky' and features on the new Mavis collaboration
album.
"It's the first song after my stroke, it was difficult
in a way but the lyrics are simple and direct. "I like
them simple and direct. 'I'm Feeling Lucky' is about
positive music, it's inspirational in a way. "It's a
good song. My son did the lead guitar solo, He's called
William and is 19, it's a great solo, an exciting solo
and I like it."
The Mavis album, which is a collaboration inspired by
Mavis Staples and the brainchild of producers Ashley
Beedle and Darren Morris, is out on 15 February. Cerys
Matthews, Candi Staton, Ed Harcourt and Sarah Cracknell
are amongst those who feature on the record.
"I'm still learning five years down the line, I've got a
long way to go, I'm getting there slowly."
Edwyn Collins also said he's been working on a new solo
record: "It's coming slowly, my lyrics, 11 new songs,
simple new songs, I'm getting there," he explained. "One
of the songs, drummer Paul Cook ( from the Sex Pistols)
has done it. "It's called 'I'm Losing Sleep' it's kind
of like Northern Soul crossed with punk I suppose. "I'm
really happy with the results. It's great, it's
exciting, it's positive it's happening again once more."
It's taken a lot of hard work to get to this point where
he can put together a record and promote it: "It's
difficult at first and I'm learning to find my way. "I'm
still learning five years down the line, I've got a long
way to go, I'm getting there slowly, it's taking a long
time and I'm finally raring to go," he continued.
"I'm finally getting my lyrics done but i'm pleased with
the results."
